Affordable Rental Housing for the Urban Poor: Demand, Supply and Management Dynamics

The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) is conducting a series of dialogues which will explore potential forward-looking solutions to enable district and municipal administrations in addressing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on vulnerable and marginalised populations, including migrant workers. The series is being organised in partnership with the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), the All India Institute Of Local Self Government (AIILSG) and Foundation European Monitoring and Development Assistance (EMDA) South Asia. The inaugural event in the series was held on September 18, 2020, on the topic of ‘Urban Labour Rights and State Response in Times of Covid-19.’  

The second webinar in the series will be on ‘Affordable Rental Housing for the Urban Poor: Demand, Supply and Management Dynamics’. The session will focus on the aspects of demand, supply and management of rental housing for the urban poor and migrant communities as an effort to address their housing vulnerabilities by focussing on state-facilitated provisions. The session will be moderated by Dr. Gautam Bhan (Senior Lead, IIHS) and Mr. Swastik Harish (Senior Lead, IIHS). 

The expert panel includes: Mr. Amrit Abhijit (Joint Secretary and Mission Director, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs [MoHUA]); Prof. Darshini Mahadevia (School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University); Ms. Mukta Naik (Fellow, Centre for Policy Research [CPR]); and Mr. Pankaj Kapoor (Founder and Managing Director, Liases Foras Real Estate Rating and Research Pvt. Ltd.).
